education
Education was a very important to the Aztecs. Every child had to attend school including girls and slaves. Schools were mandatory and free. The teachers were highly respected. Girls learned to cook, sew, weave, and how to take care of the children. There were two types of schools for boys: Calmecac (school for the sons of the upper class) and Cuicacalli (school for the commoners).
Calmecac was attended by the nobles, sons of wealthy traders and merchants. The students were taught law, writing, medicine, engineering and building, interpretation of dreams and omens, and self expression. They also learned about history and religious beliefs. School was tough; boys were humiliated and despised to toughen them up.
At Cuicacalli (school for the commoners), the students were trained to be warriors and farmers.
