Woman played very important/ respected roles in society. Aztec women married around the age of 15, and sometimes young as 10 or 12 years old.The most important role woman played in Aztec culture was that of mother, and vital to a women becoming a mother were two people: the matchmaker and the midwife.
To woman birth of a child was a momentous occasion. In this occasion families unit and begin to give a woeful speech about the hardships of life. A matchmaker is responsible for uniting suitable brides and grooms. Midwives are respected woman who supervise and assists with a woman's pregnancy, delivery, and performed the ceremonial ritual's associated with child birth. The Midwife wore turquoise ear plugs. They offered emotional support as well as addressed pregnant woman with long speeches about how to protect the unborn child. They also warned women to not look at red objects because it would cause the child to be born in the wrong position. Lastly midwives managed households while women were pregnant.
The woman could also become Priestess. As an infant, a girl could be dedicated to the priesthood. When older, they could leave priesthood if desired and start a family. As a priest, woman’s job was sweep the temple and the court yard everyday, water the garden, make food for the idols and the priests. They would be involved in some rituals to the god in which they would assist the priest in sacrifices and idol worship.
